Wind in the Pines Kung Fu Classes
Praying Mantis Kung Fu
Adults (13+) and Children (5-12)
Our Praying Mantis Kung Fu program teaches a no-nonsense, aggressive style focused on real-world self-defense. Students learn powerful strikes, kicks, locks, and grappling—built for effectiveness, not show.
Adult and children’s classes are designed with different goals in mind. Adult classes focus on advanced application, conditioning, and real-life self-defense scenarios, pushing students to refine technique and build strength under pressure.
Children’s classes emphasize fundamentals, safety, coordination, and respect—creating a structured, supportive environment where young martial artists can grow in confidence and discipline while learning practical skills in a fun and engaging way.
Grappling and Wrestling
Adults (13+) and Children (5-12)
Our training includes Chin Na (joint locks and control techniques) and Shuai Jiao (traditional Chinese wrestling and throwing), both of which are essential components of authentic kung fu.
Chin Na teaches students how to seize, trap, and control an opponent’s limbs through precise joint manipulation, making it highly effective for neutralizing threats without relying on brute strength.
Shuai Jiao complements this by focusing on balance disruption, leverage, and timing to throw or take down an opponent with speed and efficiency.
Together, these arts emphasize control, restraint, and effectiveness—key principles for real-world self-defense.
Internal Martial Arts
Adults only (13+)
Our training in Tai Chi, Xingyi, Bagua, and Qigong blends combat effectiveness with health cultivation. These internal arts develop real-world self-defense skills through structure, breath control, and internal power—teaching students to generate force with relaxed precision rather than brute strength.
While each style offers unique strategies—Tai Chi’s redirection, Xing Yi’s focused power, Bagua’s circular footwork, and Qigong’s energy cultivation—they all enhance balance, coordination, and mental clarity. The result is a training system that strengthens the body, sharpens the mind, and prepares students for both real-life confrontation and long-term wellness.
Weapons
Adults (13+) and Children (5-12)
Our Weapons Class is dedicated to the practical application of both modern and traditional weapons, with a clear focus on techniques that are relevant to real-world defense scenarios.
Students are introduced to a range of weapons—from the long staff and the knife to the traditional spear—and are trained in methods that are efficient, direct, and battle-tested. Each technique is broken down and practiced with purpose, ensuring that every movement has a real application and contributes to developing reflexes, precision, and control.
Rather than flashy or overly stylized choreography, this class centers on realistic combat readiness. Students learn to assess situations, choose the appropriate response, and execute techniques with confidence and clarity.
Wind in the Pines Kung Fu Studio
Wind in the Pines Kung Fu is a traditional martial arts studio located at 503 S. Timberland Drive in Lufkin, Texas, nestled within the Chestnut Village II Shopping Center, just behind Shipley’s Donuts.
The facility spans 1,200 square feet, fully outfitted with 1-inch thick exercise mats throughout the training area and additional 2-inch thick throwing mats as needed, creating a safe and supportive environment for rigorous training in striking, grappling, and throwing techniques. The school maintains a collection of training weapons, including rubber knives, foam-padded sticks and staffs, and traditional wooden arms, ensuring students can practice with both modern and classical tools.
Each class begins and ends with the resonant sound of a gong, reinforcing the studio’s commitment to discipline and tradition.
Sifu Brad
In the early 1990’s, Sifu Brad began his martial arts journey by training in various traditional Kung Fu styles, including Praying Mantis and Five Animals under Sifu David Buxton, and studying Shaolin Kung Fu and Qigong with Shaolin Monk Gno Bianchi.
He deepened his practice with Tai Chi and internal martial arts under Terry Thoburn, focusing on effortless power, flow, and combat effectiveness.
His path then led him to Qin Wu, who introduced him to her unique style of Praying Mantis and Wu Xing Quan boxing.
Sifu Brad’s quest for knowledge further took him to study with multiple masters in Praying Mantis Kung Fu and other traditional systems.
Today, Sifu Brad continues to refine his expertise, emphasizing practical self-defense and sharing his knowledge through a blend of Kung Fu and Qigong.
Sifu Brad holds a BS from Stephen F. Austin State University, a MS and PhD from Texas A&M University, a MBA from University of Massachusetts, and completed a fellowship at Harvard University. For his day job, he is a consultant for healthcare organizations, pharmaceutical companies, and patient advocacy organizations.
