The Unified Science of Grappling
Where Northern Mantis Converges with Judo and Aikido
In our academy, we don't treat styles as separate silos. We recognize that the core principles of balance, leverage, and anatomical control are universal. We teach a rare integration of Northern Praying Mantis, Judo, and Tomiki Aikido—three arts that share a deep, ancestral connection to internal mechanics.
It is a common misconception in the modern martial arts world that Judo is merely a competitive sport and Aikido is a passive, ineffective dance. This perspective ignores the lethal, Old School roots of both systems. In our academy, we strip away the restrictive rules of Olympic Judo to focus on the original combat-effective throws and bone-breaking finishes that were once standard. Likewise, we teach Tomiki Aikido as a high-pressure martial science, emphasizing live application and the same anatomical destruction found in its battlefield precursors. By reconnecting these arts to the internal mechanics of Tai Chi and Bagua, we move past the watered-down versions seen in many franchises. We don’t train for medals or cooperation; we train to seize control of an attacker’s center and neutralize the threat with the uncompromising efficiency of the original masters.
The Mantis Edge: Chin Na & Structural Destruction
Northern Mantis is not just a striking art; it is a sophisticated system of Chin Na and Chinese wrestling. Our Mantis takedowns are surgical and high-risk. We focus on the "Control of the Axis"—utilizing neck manipulations and spinal pivots. As the saying goes: "Where the head goes, the body must follow."
Trapping into Takedowns: We use the Mantis Hook to not only strike, but to seize limbs and manipulate joints in a single, fluid motion.
Neck & Spine Control: Utilizing the aggressive roots of the style to end fights by controlling the opponent's central nervous system.
Judo & Aikido: The Whole-Body Extension
While Mantis often focuses on the "parts" to break the "whole," Judo and Tomiki Aikido expand the combat geometry through whole-body throws and circular momentum.
Judo (The Power of Gravity): Using the legs, hips, and core to execute high-amplitude throws. This provides a different range of leverage, allowing you to use the earth itself as a weapon.
Tomiki Aikido (The Science of Redirection): Stemming from the same Internal roots as Tai Chi and Ba Gua, Aikido focuses on capturing an attacker’s intent and spiraling it into a joint lock or a pin.
A Shared Ancestry: The Internal Connection
It is no coincidence that these arts work so well together. The Old School secrets of Judo and Aikido were born from the same internal precursors found in Tai Chi and Bagua Zhang.
The Root: All these arts require a deep understanding of Center and Internal Power.
The Result: By training all three, you develop a full understanding of the dynamics of the human body. You learn to strike like a predator, seize like a mantis, and throw like a mountain.
