Sanda & San Shou: The Crucible of Combat
Traditional Power. Modern Pressure. No Compromise.
Sanda (Free Fighting) is the uncompromising, live-fire expression of Chinese Martial Arts. While the modern world often mislabels it as "Chinese Kickboxing," that description is far too narrow. Sanda is a complete, multi-range combat system that bridges the gap between explosive striking and high-impact wrestling.
At our academy, Sanda is the scientific laboratory where our traditional systems are tested. This is where the "Old School" meets the reality of a resisting opponent. We don’t train for the aesthetics of a form; we train for the moment of impact.
The Four Pillars: A 360-Degree Combat System
Sanda is built on four distinct "Pillars" of engagement. By integrating these, we ensure our students are never out of their element, regardless of where the fight goes.
Kicking: We utilize long-range, deceptive kicks designed to destroy an attacker’s foundation. These aren't just sport kicks; they are aimed at the joints and the empty spaces in an opponent’s guard, utilizing the agility found in our Northern Mantis roots.
Striking: Our striking utilizes the relentless, precision strikes of praying mantis and the explosive striking of Tai Chi and Bagua. We teach you to hit through the target, not at it, using whole-body integration to generate power that belies your size.
The Art of the Throw: This is the soul of Sanda. Sanda focuses on the instant takedown. We utilize leg catches, hip loads, and the specialized Chinese Wrestling (Shuai Jiao) that turns an opponent's kick into a catastrophic trip.
Seizing & Controlling: We integrate Chin Na and Chinese Wrestling into the clinch. We don't just “hug"—we seize limbs, manipulate the neck, and disrupt the opponent's structure to create openings for finishing strikes.
The Mantis Wrestling Edge: Where the Head Goes...
One of the most unique aspects of our Sanda program is the integration of Northern Mantis takedowns. Modern sports have banned many of these techniques because they are too dangerous for the ring, but in our Old School curriculum, they are essential.
Our wrestling focuses heavily on Neck Manipulation. We understand the physiological truth that "where the head goes, the body must follow." By seizing the Axis (the neck and spine), we can drive a much larger attacker into the ground with minimal effort. We combine the whole-body leverage of Judo and Aikido with the surgical seizing of the Mantis, ensuring that if a fight hits the clinch, it ends on our terms.
Hard Training for a Soft World
Modern society has engineered a soft existence. We sit in ergonomically designed chairs, stare at blue-light screens, and move in two dimensions. This stagnation doesn't just kill your mobility; it kills your spirit. Sanda is the ultimate Hard reset.
Forging the Warrior’s Chassis: Sanda conditioning is re-wiring for the human body. It builds a type of wiry, functional strength that you cannot get from a weight machine. You develop explosive fast-twitch fiber, elite-level cardiovascular endurance, and joints that are conditioned for impact.
The Psychological Reset: There is no room for anxiety, emails, or "to-do" lists when you are in the crucible of a Sanda session. The high-intensity nature of the training forces a state of Total Presence. This active meditation is the most effective tool we offer for reclaiming your mental health and silencing the noise of modern life.
The Survival Mindset: We respect the athlete, but we train the survivor. While we follow strict safety protocols in the gym, we never lose sight of the "No-Rules" reality of the street. We train you to be calm in the chaos, to breathe when others panic, and to end a threat with the uncompromising efficiency of the original masters.
The Hidden Foundation: Why Sanda is "Internal"
Many of our students are surprised to discover that the devastating throws and takedowns of Sanda and San Shou are built directly upon the foundations of Tai Chi Chuan and Bagua Zhang.
To the untrained eye, Sanda looks like a modern combat sport. But look closer at the mechanics of a high-speed Sanda leg-catch or a clinch-throw:
The Tai Chi Connection: Sanda takedowns rely on off-balancing and the ability to yield to an opponent's force before redirecting it. That weightless feeling a Sanda fighter creates when they trip an attacker is the direct application of Tai Chi’s "Supreme Ultimate" boxing principles.
The Bagua Connection: The deceptive footwork and the ability to spiral around an opponent's guard in Sanda come directly from the circular geometry of Bagua. We don't just crash into people; we use the Walking the Circle mechanics to find the angle where the opponent is weakest.
In our school, you aren't just learning Kickboxing. You are learning how to take the internal power you developed in Tai Chi and Bagua and release it with full-contact intensity. The forms are the textbook; Sanda is the exam.
